A sub visual depicting Enma (閻魔) — the king of the underworld in Buddhist tradition — has been released for the upcoming Studio Ghibli Kikaku Seisaku: Hakuin-san no Zen Kyoto Exhibition, a large-scale immersive art show planned and produced by Studio Ghibli.
An Immersive Zen Experience in Kyoto
The exhibition will be held at the Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art, New Wing — Higashiyama Cube in Kyoto, from 17 December 2026 to 11 January 2027. The venue will be closed on Mondays that are not public holidays, and opening hours are 10:00–18:00.
The show serves as the second-half exhibition following Zen to Ghibli: Kyoto Exhibition, which opens at the same venue on 3 October. It centres on the life and teachings of Hakuin Ekaku (白隠慧鶴), the revered Rinzai Zen monk, bringing his artwork and messages to life through immersive spatial visuals.
Enma and Kannon: Two Sides of the Same Truth
The newly released Enma sub visual is directly linked to the main visual featuring Kannon (観音), which was unveiled in June. Together, the two images express one of Hakuin’s core teachings: that Enma and Kannon — judgment and salvation — are inseparable, two faces of a single reality.
