The first entry in the Made in Abyss theatrical film series — Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery (メイドインアビス 目覚める神秘) — is set to open in Japanese cinemas on October 23, 2026. A full trailer has now been unveiled, along with the announcement of two additional cast members and the film’s official theme song.

Story and Background

Made in Abyss is based on the manga by Akihito Tsukushi, serialised in Takeshobo’s “Take Comics!” magazine, with the series having surpassed 22 million copies in circulation. The fantasy series is renowned for blending breathtaking beauty with unflinching cruelty, following the adventures of Riko, a young cave raider who dreams of unravelling the secrets of the Abyss — the world’s last great unexplored chasm — alongside Reg, an amnesiac robot she discovers.

The anime franchise began with the first TV series in 2017, followed by the theatrical film Dawn of the Deep Soul in 2020 and the second TV season The Golden City of the Scorching Sun in 2022. The new theatrical series continues directly from those events. In Part 1: Awakening Mystery, Riko and her companions invite Faputa, the “Princess of the Narehate,” to join them as they descend into the Seventh Layer of the Abyss.

Full Trailer and New Characters

The newly released full trailer showcases Riko, Reg, Nanachi, and Faputa pressing onward into the Seventh Layer. Two new characters also make their appearance: Tepaste and Cravali.

The additional cast members have been confirmed: Sumire Morohoshi will voice Tepaste, while Takanori Hoshino will voice Cravali.

Theme Song: “Chain of the Abyss”

Series composer Kevin Penkin, who has defined the sonic identity of Made in Abyss throughout its run, returns for the theatrical series. The theme song for Part 1 is “Chain of the Abyss”, featuring globally popular virtual artist Mori Calliope. A portion of the track can already be heard in the full trailer.
