Netflix has released an English-dubbed trailer for Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe (Kidō Senshi Gundam: Senkō no Hathaway — Circe no Majo), the second installment of the Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway trilogy, announcing that the film will begin streaming on the platform on August 31.

Box Office Performance in Japan

The film opened in Japan on January 30 and debuted at #1 at the box office in its opening weekend. It sold 511,500 tickets and earned approximately 849 million yen (about US$5.43 million) in its first three days, going on to accumulate over 2.3 billion yen (about US$14.6 million) in total. The film had previously been delayed from a planned 2025 release.

Story

Bandai Namco Filmworks describes the second film as continuing to follow Hathaway as he struggles between his unresolved feelings for Gigi and his commitment to MAFTY’s mission, while Kenneth prepares to suppress the group. Meanwhile, Gigi‘s presence proves pivotal, ultimately altering the destinies of both men in an intense space opera of drama, combat, and emotional complexity.

Staff

The main cast and most of the staff returned from the first film. Yuichi Kuboki joined Takako Suzuki as a color key artist, while Yoshinori Sayama — known for Macross Plus, Cowboy Bebop, and Mobile Suit Gundam UC — continued in the role of display designer. Yoshihisa Ōyama served as compositing director of photography, and Manabu Kamitōno directed visual effects.

Music

American R&B artist SZA‘s 2022 track “Snooze” serves as the film’s opening theme. SennaRin performs the insert song “ENDROLL” alongside Yōhei Kawakami of Alexandros.

Working Title and Novel Differences

The second film carried the working title Kidō Senshi Gundam Senkō no Hathaway: San of Bright. Producer Ogata explained that the Japanese katakana “サン (San)” can be read as either “sun” or “son” — a nod to the fact that protagonist Hathaway Noa is the son of Bright Noa. Ogata also noted that the second film will deviate from Yoshiyuki Tomino‘s original novel series in certain respects.

The First Film

The first Gundam Hathaway film opened in Japan in June 2021 after three delays, having originally been scheduled for July 2020 before COVID-19 and subsequent states of emergency pushed it back. It sold 259,074 tickets for roughly 523 million yen (about US$4.77 million) in its opening three days, debuting at #3 by tickets sold. It eventually became the first Gundam film since Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack (1988) to surpass the 1 billion yen mark, accumulating approximately 2.209 billion yen (about US$19.57 million) in Japan as of October 2021. Netflix U.S. began exclusively streaming the first film in July 2021.

A four-episode re-cut television version of the first film also aired on Nippon TV’s AnichU programming block, premiering on January 5.
