ฮาซาเวย์ โนอา จาก Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway's Flash

Japan’s Obon holiday — a time when people traditionally return home to spend time with family — became the unlikely backdrop for a viral moment, after the official Prime Video Anime account on X posted on August 16:

“Just one day of Obon left. Did everyone get to relax? Whether you made it back to your family home or not — there might be something you can learn from Hathaway.”

The post, accompanied by images from both the original and latest entries in the Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway’s Flash (機動戦士ガンダム 閃光のハサウェイ) franchise, immediately set off a wave of incredulous reactions. The reason is simple: Hathaway Noa, the character being held up as a life lesson, is the son of veteran Federation officer Bright Noa — and chose to become the leader of the anti-Earth Federation movement Mafty, placing him in direct ideological conflict with his own father.

About Hathaway’s Flash

Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway’s Flash is a film adaptation of the novel by Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino, set in the same universe as Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack. The story follows Hathaway Noa as the leader of Mafty, whose fate becomes entangled with the mysterious Gigi Andalucia — a girl with an unusual power — and Colonel Kenneth Sleg of the Earth Federation Forces, in a deeply human drama of conflicting loyalties.

The first chapter was released in theaters in June 2021 to praise for its hard-edged, realistic combat and nuanced character psychology. The second chapter of the trilogy, Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway’s Flash — Circe’s Witch, has been in theaters since January 2026 and has already surpassed 2.5 billion yen at the box office, outperforming its predecessor.

Fan Reactions

The post triggered an avalanche of comedic pushback from fans. A sample of the responses:

  • “There’s no way Mafty is going home for the holidays!!”
  • “Watching Hathaway really does make you want to be a good child to your parents!!!” (ironically)
  • “So we can learn about filial impiety!”
  • “The greatest act of disrespect to one’s parents in all of Gundam…”
  • “Are you encouraging terrorism lol”
  • “Never learn anything from Hathaway, ever”
  • “Have you no human heart?”
  • “What kind of marketing strategy is this”
  • “I actually laughed out loud”
  • “There is literally nothing to learn from Hathaway w”
  • “Is this supposed to be a joke!?”

Controversial as the post may be, it undeniably did its job of getting people talking — and if you haven’t yet seen Hathaway’s Flash, now might be the perfect time to find out exactly what all the fuss is about.
