Series Background

The franchise began with the Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai TV anime, which aired in Japan from October 2018 for 13 episodes, adapting the first five novel volumes. The theatrical film Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl followed in June 2019; Crunchyroll began streaming it with English subtitles and dub in June 2025.

The more recent film series kicked off with Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out (June 2023), which earned over ¥175 million in its opening weekend, and continued with Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid (December 2023), which brought in roughly ¥164 million in its first three days — both debuting at #4 at the box office.

The TV anime Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus, adapting the “University Student Arc,” premiered on July 5, with Crunchyroll simulcasting and streaming an English dub.

The original novel series has over 3 million copies in circulation. Yen Press publishes the English-language novels under its Yen On imprint, as well as Tsugumi Nanamiya’s manga adaptation. The Dear Friend novel volume was published in English on January 6.
