Story

The pinnacle of human civilization has long since fallen, leaving only ruins behind. Society struggles to rebuild by rediscovering knowledge from powerful ancient artifacts — relics of the “Old World” that can make the fortunes of those who find them, if the ancient security systems and rogue bioweapons don’t kill the hunters first.

Akira, a young street orphan desperate to escape his brutal life in the slums, sets out to become a relic hunter. Untrained, malnourished, and poorly armed, his odds of survival are slim — until a chance encounter with Alpha, a mysterious ghostly woman, changes everything. Alpha needs a hunter and offers to train Akira in exchange. Together, they must fight their way to the top of a crushing and merciless world.

The light novels are written by Nahuse with illustrations by Gin, environmental art by yish, and mechanical design by cell, published by Kadokawa. Nahuse originally began serializing the story on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō and Kakuyomu websites in February 2017, with Kadokawa launching the print edition in 2019. The final part of the ninth volume is scheduled for release on November 17.

The manga adaptation, drawn by Kirihito Ayamura, launched in July 2019, with its 16th compiled volume released on July 27. The novels previously ranked #5 on the tankōbon chart in the 2020 edition of Takarajimasha’s Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! guidebook.

J-Novel Club is publishing both the light novels and manga adaptation in English.
