Fuji News Network and Oricon News reported on Friday that Leo Morimoto (birth name Haruyuki Morimoto), a celebrated Japanese actor and narrator, passed away suddenly on September 4 from unknown causes. His agency confirmed the news. He was 83 years old.
Life and Career
Morimoto was born on February 13, 1943, in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. After graduating from the Nihon University College of Art, he began his career as a radio DJ before transitioning into acting. He appeared in the 1974 NHK live-action series Kiiroi Namida (Yellow-Colored Tears) and went on to take supporting roles in numerous popular TV dramas, including Long Vacation and Shomuni. In his later years, he became a familiar face on the quiz variety program Quiz Presen Variety Q-sama!!
A Prolific Narrator
Morimoto was equally renowned as a narrator, lending his distinctive voice to countless commercials and documentaries. He served as the Japanese narrator for Thomas & Friends for many years, and also narrated the anime series Bartender and Dragon Goes House-Hunting. He additionally narrated the 2007 video game Eternal Sonata.
Anime and Voice Acting Work
In anime, Morimoto is best remembered for starring as Shitotsugh Lhadatt in the landmark film Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise. He also voiced Captain Erskine in Agatha Christie no Meitantei Poirot to Marple, and earlier in his career portrayed Zhuge Liang in the 1982 puppet show Records of the Three Kingdoms.
