Subaru Feels Like Subaru Again

After episodes of struggling with amnesia, Natsuki Subaru finally resolves to fight back. His plan: read the “Book of the Dead” in the archive to find a weakness against Raid Astrea, the second trial. Emilia quips that it’s a typically “sneaky” Subaru scheme, and Subaru fires back with a distinctly old-fashioned turn of phrase that makes her burst into a delighted smile. Fans on X were quick to note: “Subaru’s back!” and “Emilia looks so happy — she’s adorable.”

Subaru also pulls Julius Eucleus aside for a private talk to clear the air between them. He tells Julius that what he’s missing isn’t courage but fighting spirit — the absolute refusal to lose — then entrusts Julius with full responsibility for the battle against Raid. The line became the episode’s standout quote, and fans were moved by how far the two have come from their rocky first meeting.

The Memory Thief Revealed: Lui Arneb

When the group reaches the archive and Subaru begins reading Raid’s Book of the Dead, what greets him isn’t Raid’s memories but an enemy: Lui Arneb, the third Gluttony Archbishop, sibling to Roy Alphard and Ley Batenkaitos. She is the one who snuck into the archive on a previous occasion and devoured Subaru’s memories. Fans reacted with a mix of shock and vindication: “So it was Gluttony all along!”

In a pocket dimension called the “Memory Corridor,” Lui methodically exposes Subaru’s hidden feelings one by one, trying to make him acknowledge that his current self and his pre-amnesia self are separate people — because her rule prevents her from eating the same person’s memories twice. She needs Subaru to reject his former identity first. The relentless verbal assault had viewers squirming, with many praising voice actress Ohara Yoshimi’s performance: “This is an Ohara one-woman show,” and “Absolutely incredible.”

Meanwhile, a swarm of magic beasts attacks the tower. Shaula and the others rush out to intercept but are quickly overwhelmed, and Lui’s “brother” appears to make things even worse.

“Stand Up!” — Rem Returns

Cornered into choosing between his pre-amnesia self and his current self — knowing that reclaiming his memories means his present identity will be overwritten — Subaru nearly falls into Lui’s trap. Then footsteps approach, and a figure with a warm, familiar smile appears: Rem, someone who exists nowhere in Subaru’s current memories.

She is a fragment of “unwanted memory” that Lui discarded when she first devoured Subaru’s recollections. But she is undeniably there, and she challenges Subaru sharply before urging him to accept both versions of himself.

“Why are you trying to choose only one? …Stand up!”
