Bandai Namco Entertainment America has released the opening movie for Echoes of Aincrad, the new action RPG set in Reki Kawahara’s Sword Art Online universe. The video serves as the first preview of the game’s theme song, “Live to Survive” by Aimer.

The track also doubles as the theme for the bundled bonus anime “Unanswered//butterfly.” It will be available digitally in English, Japanese, and as an instrumental version, with a lyric video set to stream at 8:00 p.m. JST.

Story and Gameplay

Echoes of Aincrad is set in the world of Aincrad, the iconic floating castle from the original Sword Art Online story. Players take on the role of one of the 10,000 players trapped inside the deadly MMO-turned-death game, exploring the world alongside familiar faces including Kirito and Asuna.

Release Dates and Editions

In Japan, the game launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on July 9, and on PC via Steam on July 10. Western markets will receive the game on all platforms on July 10.

The game will be available in four editions:

  • Standard Edition — Base game
  • Deluxe Edition — Includes expansion DLC, a starter item pack, and early access to the “Death Game” mode (a permadeath-style mode that normally unlocks only after completing the game once)
  • Ultimate Edition — Everything in the Deluxe Edition, plus the “Unanswered//butterfly” bonus anime app, digital soundtrack, digital artbook, and an in-game armor pack
  • Aincrad Edition — Exclusive to the Bandai Namco Store; includes all Deluxe and Ultimate Edition content plus physical extras: a beanie, wall scroll, patches, and a sticker pack

“Unanswered//butterfly” Bonus Anime

The special promotional anime “Unanswered//butterfly,” included with the Ultimate and Premium Editions, follows side characters during the events of the original Sword Art Online story, offering a fresh perspective on the Aincrad arc.

About the Sword Art Online Franchise

Reki Kawahara first began writing Sword Art Online as a web novel in 2001, serializing it on his personal website from 2002 to 2008. Kadokawa’s Dengeki Bunko label began publishing a revised print edition in 2009. The original story concluded with the “Alicization” arc in the 18th volume in 2016, before the series returned with the all-new “Moon Cradle” arc in 2017 and the “Unital Ring” arc in 2018. The series is now at its 29th volume overall.

The franchise has spawned novel and manga spinoffs, a multi-season television anime, an anime film, and a proposed live-action series. Kawahara’s Sword Art Online: Progressive spinoff novel series has also inspired two anime films of its own.
