The team behind the “psychedelic cyber-noir” anime film Tamala 2030: A Punk Cat in Dark released a full trailer and key visual on Thursday, confirming that the film will open simultaneously in Japan and the United States on January 22.
Synopsis
A follow-up to the 2002 cult film Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space, the new film is set in Cat Tokyo in the year 2030. It follows Tamala — a pint-sized, chain-smoking, time-hopping cat — as she impulsively teams up with her detective friend Michelangelo to investigate a series of bizarre disappearances across Cat Japan. Their investigation leads them toward ancient occult forces, cosmic prophecy, and a shadowy megacorporation with a familiar name: Catty & Co. As the mystery deepens, it becomes increasingly unclear whether Tamala is merely a wayward mascot — or something far more significant.
U.S. distributor Deaf Crocodile describes the film as a futuristic Neo-Noir that amplifies the metaphysical chaos of its predecessor. Inspired in part by the sudden loss of loved ones during the COVID-19 pandemic, the film blends surreal satire, pop iconography, and fragmented narrative, drawing on the influences of Philip K. Dick, David Lynch, and Thomas Pynchon while channeling the aesthetics of Hello Kitty and post-internet paranoia.
Staff
Writer, director, and composer duo K. and kuno — collectively known as t.o.L — return from the original film. Kentaro Nemoto, who also worked on the first film, returns to design characters and will direct the animation.

Distribution and Festival Screenings
California-based Deaf Crocodile and Cartuna will handle the film’s North American theatrical release. The film had its world premiere at the 29th Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal (July 16 – August 3), and is also scheduled to screen at Spain’s Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival (October 9–19).
The original Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space, which had never received an English-language release since its 2002 Japanese debut, was released on home video by Deaf Crocodile in October.
