TOHO animation released a new trailer for The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) Season 3 on Friday, revealing that Eve will perform the anime’s ending theme song, “AIYOU.”
Premiere Date and Season Structure
The third season is set to debut on October 2 at 11:00 p.m. JST as part of the “Friday Anime Night” programming block on NTV and 29 affiliated channels. The first cour will air this fall, with the second cour scheduled to premiere in April 2027.
New Cast and Music
Voice actress Reina Ueda joins the Season 3 cast as Bai Niangniang, described as a pale and mysterious nymph.
yorushika will handle the opening theme with “Kumo o Nukekazashimo e Watashidake” (translated as “I Am Alone, Breaking Through the Clouds Downwind”).
Upcoming Film and Live-Action Series
The franchise is also expanding beyond the anime. The film Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Bōhi no Hihō (The Apothecary Diaries: The Deceased Empress’ Treasure) will open in Japanese theaters on December 11, featuring a brand-new story written by original novelist Hyuganatsu. Additionally, a live-action adaptation is in development and will debut on Amazon Prime Video worldwide in 2028.
Previous Seasons
The first anime season launched in October 2023 with its opening three episodes and ran for two cours. Season 2 followed in January 2025 on Nippon TV’s FRIDAY ANIME NIGHT block, also spanning two consecutive cours. Both seasons are available on Crunchyroll, including English dubs.
About the Story
Based on the light novel series by Hyuganatsu with illustrations by Touko Shino, The Apothecary Diaries follows Maomao, an ordinary girl raised by her apothecary father who finds herself kidnapped and sold into service at the hougong — the rear palace where the emperor’s consorts and serving women reside. Despite her plain appearance, Maomao possesses a razor-sharp intellect and deep knowledge of medicine. Her secret is uncovered by Jinshi, the perceptive head eunuch, who assigns her as a lady-in-waiting to the Emperor’s favorite consort — with the duty of tasting her food for poison.
