The Japanese entertainment industry is mourning the loss of Toru Shinagawa, a veteran actor and voice actor who has passed away at the age of 90. His agency, Knockout, confirmed that he had been undergoing treatment for lymphoma prior to his death.
Life and Career
Shinagawa was born in Hokkaido in 1935 and graduated from a performing arts institute in 1962. Following his graduation, he joined a theater troupe led by Takeo Hodoshima, launching a career that would span stage, film, television, and voice acting over several decades.
He became widely recognized on television for his role as a professor in the 2003 live-action series Shiroi Kyotō (White Tower). On the film side, his starring performance in the 2014 movie No no Nanana no ka (Seven Weeks) earned him a special award at the 24th Japan Film Professional Awards. In his later years, he continued to appear in films including Yama Onna, Ai no Komuragaeri, Doll House, and Menkyo Hennō!?
Live-Action Anime Roles
Anime fans will remember Shinagawa for his appearances in live-action adaptations. He portrayed the King of Xerxes in both of the Hagane no Renkinjutsushi: Kanketsu-hen films in the Fullmetal Alchemist franchise. He also appeared in the live-action MW film and played the Principal in the 2002 live-action adaptation of Dark Water.

As a voice actor, Shinagawa lent his voice to a number of notable anime productions:
