The editorial team of Square Enix’s Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine announced on Wednesday that manga artist Yōko Umezu passed away on July 7 due to cerebral infarction (ischemic stroke). According to the statement, a private funeral was held with only close family members in attendance.
Vermeil in Gold Concludes
Alongside the announcement of Umezu’s passing, the editors confirmed that Vermeil in Gold (Kinsō no Vermeil: Gakeppuchi Majutsushi wa Saikyō no Yakusai to Mahō Sekai o Tsukisusumu), the manga created by writer Kōta Amana and Umezu as artist, has come to an end with the chapter published in the magazine’s July issue on June 12. The editorial staff noted that further details regarding the publication of any uncollected chapters will be announced at a later date.
About the Series
Amana and Umezu launched the manga in Monthly Shonen Gangan in August 2018. Square Enix released the 11th compiled volume on June 11. The series is available digitally in English through both Manga UP! Global and Comikey.
The manga received a television anime adaptation that premiered in July 2022. HIDIVE streamed the series simulcast with its Japanese broadcast and also offered an English dub.
Other Works
Beyond Vermeil in Gold, Umezu was also the artist behind Minidura, a spinoff manga based on Ryohgo Narita‘s Durarara!! light novel series. That series ran in Kadokawa’s Dengeki Maoh magazine from 2013 to 2015.
