Salamander Pictures and Nippon Animation announced on Friday that their anime short 20001 An Earth Odyssey will screen in competition at the Fantasia International Film Festival 2026, with its world premiere set for July 18. The festival runs in Montreal, Canada, from July 16 through August 2.

Synopsis

The story takes place in the year 20,001. Long after humanity has gone extinct, three aliens touch down on Earth with a single mission: to uncover why human civilization collapsed. Led by the stubborn yet deeply respectful Captain Kepo, the team also includes the logic-driven Alcia and rookie Regal, whose pure intuition brings the group closest to the truth.

The trio hilariously misreads the relics humanity left behind — mistaking a swing for a sacred altar, an umbrella for a communications device, and a graveyard for a farmland. Through their blunders and breakthroughs, the film asks: “What does it mean to be human?”, “What is civilization?”, and “Were humans really an intelligent species?” — all through the lens of light, surreal comedy.
