Criterion Channel will add the original Neon Genesis Evangelion television series and the films Evangelion: Death (True)² and The End of Evangelion to its streaming library on September 1.
Licensing and North American History
GKIDS licensed the original TV series and both films in 2020. The company recently screened the two films theatrically on July 21 and 22. The works had long been out of print and unavailable in North America — ADV Films last released the series on DVD with its “Platinum Edition” in 2004–2005 before shutting down in 2009. Netflix brought the 1995 series back to streaming audiences in June 2019.
About the Series
Set in the year 2015, Neon Genesis Evangelion follows Shinji Ikari, a teenager chosen to pilot the Humanoid Decisive Weapon Evangelion to defend the city of Tokyo-3 from powerful beings known as the Angels. The series explores the fate of humanity and the mysteries surrounding the Angels and their young pilots.
The Rebuild of Evangelion Tetralogy
Director Hideaki Anno founded Studio Khara in 2006 and produced a new four-film series, Rebuild of Evangelion, reimagining the events of the original. The tetralogy consists of:
- Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone (2007)
- Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (2009)
- Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo (2012)
- Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon A Time (Shin Evangelion Gekijō-ban :||) (2021)
The final film opened in Japan on March 8, 2021, debuted at #1 at the box office, and surpassed 10 billion yen (approximately US$74 million) in Japan. It launched globally on Amazon Prime Video in August 2021, and GKIDS and Fathom Events screened it in U.S. theaters with English subtitles in December 2022.
New Anime Short
The franchise continues to expand: a new anime short premiered at the “Evangelion:30+;” festival on February 21 and began official streaming on March 8.
Criterion Channel’s Growing Anime Library
Criterion Channel began adding anime titles in August 2025. Prior additions include Gunbuster: The Movie and the first season of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex in March, Gatchaman The Movie in April, and the K-ON! film in May. The addition of Evangelion marks another major milestone in the platform’s expanding anime catalog.
