The summer 2026 anime Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World Season 4 launched its second arc, “Dattan-hen” (Recapture Arc), on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, with episode 78 titled “A Story of What Comes Next.” The new arc follows the spring 2026 “Sōshitsu-hen” (Loss Arc), which concluded with Subaru steeling himself for a fresh challenge after sharing his anguish with Emilia.

From Loss to Recapture

In the previous arc, Natsuki Subaru faced a bewildering series of crises during the second trial at the Great Library Pleiades: a mysterious bout of amnesia, being pushed off a ledge by an unknown assailant, and having his body hijacked by an entity calling itself “Natsuki Subaru.” These obstacles threatened to derail his attempt to defeat the trial boss, Raid. After sharing his suffering with Emilia and accepting the side of himself he had long despised, Subaru returned from death ready to fight again. Now, in the Recapture Arc, it is time to win back the memories that were stolen.

Subaru Comes Clean — and Emilia’s Telling Slip

Back at his save point, Subaru immediately tells his companions about his amnesia, with Emilia backing him up. Ram remains skeptical, but the rest of the group is persuaded. One moment that resonated strongly with viewers was a subtle shift in how Subaru addresses Emilia: he normally calls her “Emilia-tan,” but without his memories of her, he defaults to the more formal “Emilia-chan.” Emilia notices the difference and visibly deflates — before composing herself and standing firmly by Subaru’s side. Fans praised both the writing and Emilia’s quiet resolve in the scene.

Ram’s Fierce — and Tender — Response

Convincing Ram proves far harder. She confronts Subaru aggressively, but he holds his ground and declares with full sincerity:

“Rem — I will get her back. Her and every single memory. I’ll see it all through, and we’ll all go home together!”

Ram answers with a sharp slap, then turns away — hiding a relieved smile. Viewers noted it was “still a slap, so she’s being kind by her standards,” and many expressed joy at seeing Ram smile again after so many grim episodes.

The Mystery Attacker Revealed: It Was Meili!

Subaru’s next move is to confront the person who pushed him. The culprit turns out to be Meili Portroute, who acted out of revenge for Subaru’s role in the death of Elsa — the woman Meili regarded as a true mother figure. Elsa had taken in the young Meili, who had been raised by magical beasts, given her a name, taught her to fight, to speak, and even shaped her sense of fashion. Though a shadowy “Mama” pulled the strings behind the scenes, it was Elsa who filled that role in Meili’s heart.

Viewers empathized deeply with Meili’s grief. They also noted the unsettling dynamic from Meili’s perspective: Subaru, who had read about her tragic past in the Book of the Dead, extended unconditional kindness to her — yet in this timeline he had not yet reached that point in the trial, making his insight seem inexplicably eerie to her.

Subaru chooses to forgive Meili and keep the incident between the two of them, offering to listen if she ever has grievances. When Meili attempts to take her own life, Subaru intervenes, and Emilia steps in to support her as well.

“A Happy Space That Doesn’t Feel Like Re:Zero”

With her heart opened, Meili is welcomed into the group in earnest. Shaula wraps her in a hug, and she quickly becomes something of a mascot for Emilia’s party — bewildered but visibly happy. After a season full of relentless hardship, viewers found the warmth of the scene a genuine relief. “Meili! Please be happy!” summed up the mood online.

The Challenge Ahead

The heartwarming resolution does not mean the road is clear. Subaru and his allies still face the towering obstacle of defeating Raid, and next week’s episode looks set to begin the search for Raid’s Book of the Dead.

Episode 79 airs on August 19. Seven episodes of Season 4 remain.
