Along the way, the pair encounter pirates, hidden treasures, the secret surrounding the Empress’ remains, and a mysterious boy who holds the key to the entire story.

About The Apothecary Diaries
The Apothecary Diaries is based on Hyuganatsu’s novel, which began serialization on the “Shōsetsuka ni Narō” website in October 2011. Shufunotomo began publishing the series in print with illustrations by Shino in August 2014. Nekokurage launched a manga adaptation in Square Enix’s Monthly Big Gangan magazine in May 2017. Square Enix Manga & Books publishes both the manga and novel in English, while J-Novel Club distributes the novels digitally.
The story centers on Maomao, a young woman raised by an apothecary father who is kidnapped and pressed into service at the imperial rear palace. Despite her unassuming appearance, she possesses a razor-sharp mind and deep knowledge of medicine — a secret uncovered by Jinshi, the perceptive head eunuch, who assigns her as a lady-in-waiting to the Emperor’s favorite consort, tasked with tasting her food for poison.
