The anime documentary variety special Anime ga Chikyu wo Kutte Iru (“Anime Is Devouring the Earth”) returns for a second installment, airing on September 29 at 23:06 on TV Tokyo and its affiliated networks. Nakajima Kento returns as MC, with voice actors Kaji Yuki and Hatanaka Yu, as well as comedian Miyashita Kenshitaka of the duo Miyashita Kusanagi, joining as guests.
Part of “Tele-Tokyo Anime WEEK”
The special is part of Tele-Tokyo Anime WEEK, a programming event running from September 28 to October 4. The week also features collaborations between the channel’s popular variety programs — including Kaiun! Nandemo Kantei-dan and Shutsubotsu! Ad Machi Heaven — and the world of anime. On October 2, a music program gathering artists behind Tele-Tokyo’s children’s show theme songs will air alongside a special featuring iconic anime scenes spanning the Showa, Heisei, and Reiwa eras.
Part 1: Deep-Diving into Anime Passion Around the World
Following the success of last year’s first broadcast, Part 1 of the show continues the format of interviewing so-called ani-kuwasan — people who have been utterly “devoured” by anime — both in Japan and abroad. Guests passionately discuss the anime that changed their lives, while the studio cast digs deeper into each title together.
Part 2: Yu-Gi-Oh! 30th Anniversary Special
The standout segment of the evening is the Yu-Gi-Oh! Sekaiju de Ore no Turn! SP, a special dedicated to the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, which marks the 30th anniversary of its original manga this year. The production team went behind the scenes at the franchise’s global card game tournament held in Ariake, Tokyo this past August, investigating which cards and characters have captivated fans worldwide. Hot takes and heartfelt declarations of love for Yu-Gi-Oh! from the MC and guests are also promised.
