Japan’s official government gazette (Kanpo), published on May 19, disclosed that Crunchyroll Japan recorded a net profit of 453 million yen (approximately USD 2.85 million) for the fiscal year ending December 2025 — a decline of 63% compared to the previous year’s figure of 1.239 billion yen (approximately USD 7.79 million).
While the Japan branch figures show a significant drop, Crunchyroll announced globally on May 8 that it now has over 21 million paid subscribers worldwide.
Restructuring and Layoffs
Earlier this year in March, Crunchyroll carried out a round of layoffs as part of an internal restructuring and reassignment of duties among its workforce. The company stated that the restructuring was the result of a shift in e-commerce strategy — not a cost-cutting measure.
Ownership Structure and Acquisition History
Crunchyroll operates as a joint venture managed independently between Sony Pictures Entertainment (United States) and Aniplex (Japan). Both Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) — Aniplex’s parent companies — are part of the broader Sony Group, headquartered in Tokyo.
Going back to December 2020, Sony’s Funimation Global Group announced plans to acquire Crunchyroll from AT&T, completing the deal on August 9, 2021, for a total acquisition price of USD 1.175 billion in an all-cash transaction. Home video distribution rights that had previously been held under the Funimation brand have since been consolidated under the Crunchyroll name.
