The 30th Fantasia International Film Festival, running July 16 to August 2 in Montreal, Canada, has announced a strong lineup of anime and animation titles spanning world, North American, Canadian, and international premieres.
Grotesqqque — World Premiere
One of the festival’s headline anime offerings is the world premiere of Grotesqqque, a three-part anime collection from CloverWorks. The anthology comprises three shorts: “A(E)liens,” “Yoroshiku★girl,” and “Nocturne: Nuit Grotesque.”
Strange: Junji Ito’s Tales for Sleepless Nights — World Premiere
Fantasia will also host the world premiere of two episodes from Strange: Junji Ito’s Tales for Sleepless Nights (Strange -Itō Junji no Yoru mo Nemurenu Kimyō na Hanashi-), a live-action omnibus series adapting 13 manga stories by Junji Ito. The two episodes screening are “The Rib Woman” and “Face Thief.”
Short Films — World and International Premieres
Several short films will receive their world premieres at the festival:
- “20001 An Earth Odyssey” — directed by Haruki Kasugamori
- “Ambivalent Garden” — directed by Nagomi Ueno
- “Don’t Dodge Life” — directed by Taka Yuki
- “Dust of the Simulacrum” — directed by Eit Mitsufuchi
- “FOXING: Kitsuné-tsuki” — directed by Takeru Shinozuka
Additionally, Asuka Dokai’s “Echo” and the first episode of Yūta Sano’s Future Kid Takara, subtitled “The Child from the Future,” will receive their international premieres.
A New Dawn — North American Premiere
A New Dawn (Hana Rokushō ga Akeru Hi ni), a co-production between ASMIK Ace and French studio Miyu Productions, will screen in its North American premiere at Fantasia.
cocoon – One Summer of Girlhood — Canadian Premiere
cocoon – One Summer of Girlhood (cocoon Aru Natsu no Shōjo-tachi Yori), the anime adaptation of Machiko Kyō‘s Cocoon manga, will make its Canadian premiere at the festival.
Additional Screenings
The Animation Plus Section will feature the world premiere of Cherry and Virgin and the North American premiere of the Sekiro: No Defeat anime. The festival will also host the international premiere of the live-action WIND BREAKER film and the international premiere of The Origin of Ultraman documentary.
