To mark the 20th anniversary of the TV anime The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱), a commemorative exhibition titled “TVアニメ『涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱』20周年記念『SOS展～世界を大いに盛り上げた涼宮ハルヒの展～』” will be held at Sunshine City Exhibition Hall D (2F, Culture Hall Building), Ikebukuro, Tokyo from August 10 to 30, 2026.
About the Series
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is based on the light novel series by Nagaru Tanigawa (story) and Noizi Ito (illustrations), published under Kadokawa’s Sneaker Bunko imprint. The story follows the SOS Brigade — an unofficial school club led by the eccentric Haruhi Suzumiya — through a series of sci-fi-tinged school adventures. When the anime adaptation aired in 2006, its shuffled episode order and the viral ending dance number “Hare Hare Yukai” sparked a cultural phenomenon that swept across Japan and the internet worldwide.
Exhibition Highlights
Organized by a joint committee comprising Kyodo Printing, fave, and CRAZY BUMP, the exhibition is designed to let visitors experience the so-called “Haruhi Phenomenon” firsthand. It is divided into two main sections:
- “Suzumiya Haruhi no Tsuioku” (Haruhi Reminiscence) — Revisit the story through rare production and character design materials, alongside photo spots recreating the SOS Brigade’s clubroom.
- “Suzumiya Haruhi no Genshou” (Haruhi Phenomenon) — A multi-faceted look at the lasting impact the series has had on contemporary culture over the past two decades.

- Limited Goods Exchange Voucher (SOS Brigade Leader Armband): ¥2,000 — available while stocks last; requires a separate admission ticket to redeem
Key notes: Date/time-specific tickets are required on August 10–11 and all weekends/public holidays. Junior high school students and above require a paid ticket; up to one elementary school child may enter free when accompanied by a paying adult. Re-entry is not permitted, and last admission is 30 minutes before closing.
