The currently screening live-action film Look Back, based on Fujimoto Tatsuki’s manga, has released stills from its rotoscope animation segment. Alongside the image reveal, the film’s official website published a special conversation between original creator Fujimoto Tatsuki and rotoscope animation director Kuno Haruko.
Rotoscope Sequence Directed by Kuno Haruko, Animated by Shin-Ei Animation
The film’s rotoscope animation segment was helmed by Kuno Haruko, with production handled by Shin-Ei Animation, the studio behind works such as Bakeneko Anzu-chan. Director Hirokazu Kore-eda explained his intentions for the sequence in a conversation with Fujimoto included in the theatrical pamphlet:
“In the final scene where Fujino returns to her studio and picks up her pen, I thought about what she would be carrying forward. I wanted to express a sense of positivity — that the memory of the two of them once dreaming together about making an anime comes back to her, the drawings Kyomoto made begin to move, and she rebuilds her own future. My image was of sound emerging from the drawings, the drawings coming to life, and the two of them dancing within them.”

In the conversation published on the official website, Fujimoto shared his reaction to Kuno’s animation work:
“Just watching that animation segment on its own moved me deeply, and I’m sure everyone who sees it will cry too. It’s a remarkable piece of film that communicates everything even without any knowledge of the surrounding story.”
He also revealed a personal connection to Kuno, stating that her graduation film Airy Me had a profound impact on him: “Kuno-san’s graduation work ‘Airy Me’ completely floored me — and that’s when I decided I would draw manga.”
About the Film
Look Back is the first live-action film adaptation of Fujimoto’s work. The source material is a feature-length one-shot manga serialized on Shonen Jump+ in 2021, following the growth and loss of two girls who pour their passion into drawing manga.
