The crime-suspense manga Manchuria Opium Squad (満州アヘンスクワッド) has been officially confirmed for an anime adaptation. Alongside the announcement, a first “anime reveal visual” offering a glimpse into the production has been released.
Story: Crime and Opium in Wartime Manchuria
Set in Manchuria in 1937, the series follows Higata Isamu, a Kwantung Army soldier who loses the sight in his right eye on the battlefield. Desperate to fund treatment for his ailing mother, he becomes entangled in the illicit production of opium — a decision that sends both his own life and the fate of Manchuria spiraling into darkness. The manga has sold over 3.5 million copies in cumulative circulation.
Creative Team and Serialization Restart
The series is written by Monma Tsukasa, illustrated by Tsurushima, and features original character designs by Kanoko. The manga resumed serialization in Kodansha’s Young Magazine with the issue released on October 5, with Tsurushima newly joining as the manga artist. A special restart visual drawn by Tsurushima was also unveiled to mark the occasion.
The anime announcement was made in tandem with the serialization restart. Further details — including the production studio and staff — will be revealed gradually via the official website and the series’ official social media channels.
