TV anime 『Nihon Sankoku (日本三国)』 episode 8, titled “Dragon-Tiger Decisive Battle (龍虎決戦)” aired on Monday, May 25, 2026 and set social media ablaze — particularly the scene of Riumo sitting quietly in the middle of a raging fire, with viewers flooding in to say “way too cool” and “terrifying.”
About Nihon Sankoku
Nihon Sankoku is adapted from the manga by Matsuki Ikka, serialized in the manga app “Manga ONE” and the website “Ura Sunday” by Shogakukan. Set in a near-future Japan where civilization has collapsed following a nuclear war, environmental catastrophe, and corrupt governance, the country has fractured into three kingdoms. The story follows Misumi Aoki, an ordinary local government official who becomes determined to reunite the Japanese archipelago through wisdom and strategy. The series has surpassed 10 million cumulative copies in print.
The anime adaptation is directed by Terasawa Kazuaki, produced by Studio Kafka, with lead voice cast including Ono Kensho (as Misumi Aoki), Fukuyama Jun (as Azama Yoshitsune), Seto Asami (as Hinagashi Koki), and Han Megumi (as the narrator).
Episode 8 Summary (Contains Spoilers)
The episode opens with Sakurato shooting a white snake in the forest — white snakes are considered sacred omens in Nippon culture — sparking debate online: “Killing a sacred animal before battle can’t be a good sign” and “There’s a warrior in the Warring States era who killed a white snake and went down a dark path…”
After Fukuo-Okuetsuki’s territory falls entirely to a swift, overwhelming assault, Sakurato faces his impending defeat with tears in his eyes — yet viewers watch with cold, composed eyes, commenting “Sakurato was so easily deceived” and “The Sakurato forces should rename themselves the ‘Sakurato Fan Club.’”
Riumo‘s unit is cut off from Nakamino’s retreating army, leaving him in a desperate situation. Riumo then decides to use a “stay and receive” tactic to rebuild strength, even though most of his men oppose it. Yet Kako, his military advisor, remains oddly quiet.
Riumo asks Kako for his opinion and learns that the “farmland reform plan” Aoki devised has worked brilliantly. It is also revealed that Moriyama Kishisero, who was exiled in episode 5, still plays a significant role. Viewers react with surprise: “Aoki pulled it off so quietly but so effectively” and “Wait — is the exile actually a key character!?”
Riumo then decides to use a delay tactic, even as Kako tries to stop it since the strategy risks lives. Riumo’s final parting words are: “The scariest thing is not death, but failing to fulfill the duty you have been entrusted with.” Viewers praise him: “Riumo is incredibly determined” and “Resolute to the end.”
Climactic Scene: “Empty City Stratagem”
When Sakurato receives a report that Riumo has gone out alone, he leads his forces straight toward the Kuzuriwa River — only to encounter an unexpected sight: Riumo sitting calmly on a bridge, dressed only in white. Sakurato’s army freezes, arguing “The Sakurato forces were so easily fooled” and “The Sakurato army should change their name to the ‘Sakurato Fan Club.’”
The tactic Riumo uses is the “Empty City Stratagem (空城の計)” — luring the enemy in to cause confusion and force a retreat — but Sakurato chooses to advance instead, even firing an arrow at Riumo himself. The arrow lands nearby, flames erupt, and fire engulfs Riumo’s clothing — yet Riumo doesn’t even flinch, continuing to calmly watch Sakurato through the smoke.
This scene stuns viewers enormously, with comments flooding in: “Incredible willpower,” “Absolutely resolute,” and “Scary enough to make you gasp.”
The intimidated Sakurato — caught off guard by that atmosphere — mistakes it for a charging ambush and orders an immediate retreat, while Aoki visibly shows disappointment. This retreat will become the turning point that gradually crumbles Sakurato’s credibility in the future.
Aoki Prepares to Enter the Imperial Court
Meanwhile, the advisor watching from the rear is also on the move — he orders Yoshitsune to proceed to Fukuoi as a messenger, while he himself sets off to enter the imperial court. Yoshitsune goes silently, and viewers wonder “Can he actually get inside?” and “Is he really going to bow before the emperor?” — just before episode 8 ends.
