To celebrate the 45th anniversary of its original theatrical release, Sayonara Galaxy Express 999: Andromeda Terminal Station (さよなら銀河鉄道999 アンドロメダ終着駅) will return to cinemas across Japan in a newly restored 4K remaster in December 2026. The revival follows the earlier rescreen of the first Galaxy Express 999 film and marks the second theatrical anime adaptation of Leiji Matsumoto’s beloved manga franchise to make its way back to the big screen.
Story
The film is the second theatrical anime feature based on Leiji Matsumoto’s original work. It follows Tetsuro Hoshino, a young boy who returns to an Earth still ravaged by war against the Mechanized People, only to receive a mysterious message from his former traveling companion, Maetel. Heeding her call, Tetsuro boards the Galaxy Express 999 once more, this time bound for the “Great Dark Nebula” within the Great Andromeda Ring Gravity Zone — the heart of the Mechanized Empire.
Joined by the Conductor, Captain Harlock, and Queen Emeraldas, Tetsuro must confront the empire’s terrifying ambitions. Where the first film explored the theme of eternal life, this sequel sees Matsumoto delve deeper into a young man’s independence and coming-of-age, set against breathtaking space battles and a bittersweet farewell between Tetsuro and Maetel.
