Talent agency Aoni Production issued an official announcement last Friday confirming that Wakana Yamazaki (Wakana Yamazaki), a renowned voice actress, passed away on April 18. She was 61 years old. Her family held a private funeral in a close circle of relatives.
The Voice of Ran Mori
Yamazaki was widely known for voicing Ran Mori, the female lead of the anime Detective Conan (Case Closed), a role she had held continuously since the series first aired in 1996—before she had to step back to undergo medical treatment. In her absence from episode 1,193 onward, on March 14 of last year, Akemi Okamura took over as the voice of the character and will continue in that role going forward.
Interestingly, in the past Yamazaki also voiced Nami in One Piece during episodes 70–79 (May–August 2001), while Okamura—who is the long-running voice actress for that character—was on maternity leave. The two shared a unique connection through their roles, supporting each other over many years.
Other Notable Voice Roles
Beyond her iconic role in Detective Conan, Yamazaki left her mark across many anime titles, including:
- Miki Koishikawa in the anime and film Marmalade Boy
- Ruri-Hime in Mononoke
- Koan in Sailor Moon R
- Nene in Samurai Warriors
- Nojiko in One Piece, including the specials One Piece Episode of East Blue: Luffy and His Four Friends’ Great Adventure and One Piece Episode of Nami: Kokaishi no Namida to Nakama no Kizuna, as well as the theatrical film One Piece Film: Strong World
The passing of Wakana Yamazaki represents an immeasurable loss for the Japanese voice acting industry. She leaves behind an enduring legacy that anime fans around the world will carry with them forever.
