About the Series
Mononoke (モノノ怪) originated as a spin-off of the “Bakeneko” arc from the 2006 anthology series Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales, before becoming its own TV anime the following year. The story follows the enigmatic Medicine Seller (薬売り) as he travels the land, exorcising mononoke — supernatural beings born from human obsession and resentment.
Since 2024, the franchise has returned as a theatrical trilogy set within the Ōoku (the inner chambers of Edo Castle). Mononoke the Movie: Karakasa opened in July 2024, Chapter 2 – Fire Rat followed in March 2025, and the concluding chapter depicting the “Ritual of Salvation,” Chapter 3 – Serpent God, is now showing.
