To celebrate the 10th anniversary of A Silent Voice (Koe no Katachi), based on Yoshitoki Oima‘s manga, the film is returning to Japanese theaters starting October 30 — and for the first time ever, it will screen in a Dolby Cinema version. A Word-of-Mouth Phenomenon, a Decade Later
When A Silent Voice first opened in 2016 across just 120 screens, few predicted the run it would have. Driven by word of mouth, the film became a long-running hit, ultimately grossing 2.3 billion yen at the Japanese box office. It received a Japan Academy Prize nomination for Outstanding Animation of the Year, sharing the spotlight that year with Your Name. and In This Corner of the World.
Dolby Cinema: Closer to the Original Vision
Sound director Yota Tsuruoka said he has long considered A Silent Voice a masterpiece worthy of preservation in the best possible format, and that the 10th anniversary provided the perfect opportunity to finally realize a Dolby Cinema version.
Cinematography director Kazuya Takao described the difference in brightness and shadow detail as dramatic — “like removing a thin veil” — and said the rendering of light in Dolby Cinema comes closer to what the team originally intended. He singled out the river light sequences as particularly stunning and encouraged audiences to see them on the big screen.
Stage Greeting on Opening Day
On October 30, a special 10th Anniversary Stage Greeting will be held at Marunouchi Piccadilly Dolby Cinema in Tokyo, featuring voice actors Miyu Irino (Shoya Ishida) and Saori Hayami (Shoko Nishimiya). Advance lottery tickets are available through Lawson Ticket from September 17 through October 4 at 11:59 p.m.
Anniversary Illustration and Cast Messages
Manga creator Yoshitoki Oima contributed a celebratory illustration depicting Shoya and Shoko visiting a movie theater together — framed in a way that evokes a photograph taken by Yuzuru.
Miyu Irino (Shoya Ishida)
Irino congratulated the film on its milestone and thanked fans for their continued love over the decade. He said he feels honored to have been part of a work still cherished around the world, and hopes A Silent Voice continues to reach new audiences. In a message to his past self, he noted that the connections forged through the film — including future collaborations with director Naoko Yamada and a stage performance alongside Mayu Matsuoka — have continued to shape his career in ways he could not have imagined.
Saori Hayami (Shoko Nishimiya)
Hayami reflected on how vividly she still remembers the recording sessions and stage greetings from a decade ago, calling her time inhabiting Shoko Nishimiya irreplaceable. She noted that every time someone has brought up the film to her over the past ten years, it has reminded her of how deeply the story has resonated with people. She expressed hope that both returning viewers and first-timers will take the opportunity to experience the film in theaters once more.
