Episode 84 of Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World Season 4 (Arc: Recapture), titled “Ram,” brought the simultaneous five-front battle Subaru ordered to a fever pitch — and gave viewers their first-ever look at Ram fighting at her true, unrestricted oni strength.

Five Battles at Once

While Emilia reached the first floor “Maia” to face the divine dragon Volcanica alone, Subaru, Beatrice, and Meili handled the monster stampede and a scorpion-transformed Shaula. Julius, meanwhile, had just defeated Reid Astrea in single combat with Anastasia watching. On the spiral staircase, Ram pursued Ley Batenkaitos in a fierce running battle.

Meili’s Cute Moment — Then a Scorpion’s Sting

Subaru’s team managed the monster horde with relative ease thanks to Meili’s beast-taming ability, enough for Subaru to casually ask her:

“Hey Meili, once all this is over, how about becoming part of our family?”

Meili turned red and muttered that she must be going crazy, prompting a wave of “so cute!” from viewers — until the giant scorpion’s stinger pierced her abdomen, freezing the mood instantly. Her fate remains uncertain.

Ram vs. Ley — The Horn Fragment Revealed

Ram, who lost most of her prodigious oni power when her horn broke in childhood, had been holding her own against Ley only through Subaru’s newly acquired Cor Leonis ability, which redirected damage back to Subaru. She pressed Ley relentlessly with her clairvoyance, repeatedly asking, “Well? Do you regret it?” — her voice laced with a hatred she has never let go of toward the Sin Archbishop who tore her apart from Rem.

Ley fought back by using his absorption ability to mimic various skills and, crucially, took on Rem’s appearance to psychologically unsettle Ram. The scene sent chills through viewers for multiple reasons — voice actress Inori Minase (Rem) delivered her lines in a subtly off way that made it unmistakably clear this was Ley wearing Rem’s face, not Rem herself. Many viewers commented: “This is where you really feel Inori Minase’s skill.”

When Ram’s link to Subaru was severed, she was quickly overwhelmed. But then the unexpected happened: the staff Roswaal had given her snapped, exposing a fragment of Ram’s own broken horn that had been sealed inside. The fragment temporarily restored her full power, and she unleashed a devastating blow that utterly dominated Ley.

Viewers Erupt: “Too Cool!” “I’m in Love!”

The sight of Ram with her horn — depicted in the anime for the very first time — triggered an outpouring of reactions:

Episode 85, the Season 4 finale, airs on September 30 as an extended 45-minute special. All eyes are on how the five simultaneous battles will ultimately be resolved.
