Kadokawa officially announced during a live-streamed 20th anniversary special for the Higurashi: When They Cry television anime on Sunday that a new TV anime has been green-lit. The promotional visual released alongside the announcement carries the tagline: “Welcome back, everyone.”
Franchise Origins
07th Expansion first launched the opening chapter of the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni visual novel at Comiket in 2002. The story centers on a series of murders that coincide with an annual festival in a quiet rural village. In 2014, Ryukishi07 and 07th Expansion released Higurashi: When They Cry Hou for PC in Japan as a “thank you” to longtime fans — the kanji used for Hō comes from the word Hōnō, meaning “dedication.”
Previous Anime Entries
The first Higurashi: When They Cry TV anime ran for 26 episodes in 2006, followed by When They Cry II: Solutions (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai) for 24 episodes in 2007. Geneon Entertainment Inc. released the first series on DVD in 2007–2008; Funimation followed with its own DVD release in 2009 and 2010. Sentai Filmworks later brought both series to Blu-ray Disc and DVD in 2016.
More recently, Higurashi: When They Cry – GOU premiered in October 2020, with its follow-up, Higurashi: When They Cry – SOTSU, premiering in July 2021.
Studio DEEN and Original Cast Return
Studio DEEN, which animated the original series, is returning to produce the new TV anime. The original voice cast is also coming back in full, including:
- Sōichirō Hoshi as Keiichi Maebara
- Mai Nakahara as Rena Ryūgū
- Satsuki Yukino as Mion Sonozaki and Shion Sonozaki
- Mika Kanai as Satoko Hōjō
- Yukari Tamura as Rika Furude
