Manga artist Uoto‘s acclaimed series Chi. ―About the Movement of the Earth― is joining MANGACHIEF (マンガチ), the manga-themed handkerchief line from Old-Fashioned, the company behind specialist handkerchief retailer H TOKYO. The collaboration’s first entry, titled “Belief,” goes on sale on November 13.
The handkerchief will be available at H TOKYO’s Mishuku and Marunouchi locations, OLD-FASHIONED STORE branches in Ueno and Nihonbashi, OLD-FASHIONED STORE TOKYO inside JR Tokyo Station, and through the brand’s official online store. It is priced at ¥2,750 (tax included).
A Design Inspired by Celestial Orbits
The “Belief” handkerchief features a full-color illustration of Rafał and the other protagonists — characters who live in different eras yet are bound together by a single shared conviction. They are arranged across the fabric in a pattern evoking the orbital paths of celestial bodies, a visual nod to the manga’s central themes.
The project was born from the fact that many Old-Fashioned staff members are fans of Chi. The team deliberated carefully over every element, from selecting which panels to feature and how to lay them out, to choosing the product name and color palette.
Nearly a Year in the Making
Producing the handkerchief was a meticulous process: the team read through the source manga in depth to select the right panels, then repeatedly rearranged them like puzzle pieces to find the ideal composition. Even after the design was finalized, extensive back-and-forth with the factory over color specifications and printing details — including multiple rounds of test prints — meant the product took close to a full year to bring to market.
