The anime series Girls Band Cry (ガールズバンドクライ) is heading to the stage. The production is set to run from 21 to 28 March 2027 at Sunshine Theater in Tokyo.
A New Perspective on a Familiar Story
Rather than retelling the anime beat for beat, the stage play reconstructs the events of episodes 1 through 8 with Kawaragiki Momoka as the central protagonist. Audiences will experience the girls’ first encounters, clashes, and the road to forming their band through Momoka’s eyes — a viewpoint largely unexplored in the original anime, which centred on Iseri Nina. The production also introduces an original stage-exclusive character, Hyuga Nozomi, a part-time coworker of Momoka’s.

Creative Staff
The production is supervised by Sakai Kazuo (TV anime series director and director of the upcoming new film), Hanada Jukki (series composition and screenplay), and Hirayama Masashi (Toei Animation producer). Music is handled by Tamai Kenji & agehasprings, while Nishimori Hideyuki serves as playwright and director.
Comments from the Team
Sakai Kazuo admitted he was completely caught off guard by the announcement, saying he never imagined during production that the series would one day become a stage play. He expressed excitement about what stage-specific expression can bring to the story.
Hanada Jukki said he asked the stage team to include at least one element that could be called truly original — something new rather than a retread. He described the result as “another Girls Band Cry that might have existed, seen through Momoka’s eyes.”
Hirayama Masashi expressed deep gratitude to fans whose support made the stage adaptation possible, noting that the characters “continue to live their days in Kawasaki” and that he is thrilled to see them brought to life in a new form.
Nishimori Hideyuki shared that the anime moved him to tears multiple times and that he had longed for a stage version ever since. After discussions with Hanada, they decided to create a story that runs parallel to the anime — depicting the inner journey of Momoka that was never told in the original series.
