The production team behind theatrical anime SEKIRO: NO DEFEAT has released six new scene cuts, offering a closer look at the film’s major characters.
About the Film
SEKIRO: NO DEFEAT is a theatrical anime adaptation of FromSoftware’s video game SEKIRO: SHADOWS DIE TWICE. Set in the twilight of the Sengoku era in the land of Ashina, the story centers on Wolf, a seasoned shinobi, and his young lord Kuro, the last descendant of a bloodline bearing a special power known as the “Dragon’s Heritage.” Standing against them is Ashina Genichiro, who relentlessly pursues Kuro.

The New Scene Cuts
Among the six newly released images: Wolf stands alone in a vast, silent bamboo forest; Kuro rests a hand on his head with a gentle smile; Genichiro stares forward with an expression burning with obsession. Also featured is Emma, the physician, poised with her blade amid a dim, cloud-covered grassland, her gaze sharp and resolute. Rounding out the set are Owl, Wolf’s enigmatic master, emerging from the darkness, and Ashina Isshin, the lord of Ashina, depicted with commanding dignity.
Director’s Vision
At the Aichi-Nagoya International Animation Film Festival on December 13, 2025, the staff held a talk program titled “SEKIRO Work in Progress.” Director Kenichi Kusuna described his visual ideal as wanting “drawings that can dig deep into the characters’ emotions and express them.” He also praised character designer Takahiro Kishida, saying: “Kishida’s art has fairly realistic proportions, but it blends manga-style and symbolic expression, giving it the potential for rich emotional portrayal. Even looking at an unremarkable scene he’s drawn, I’m moved to tears — his ability to depict things with emotional depth is extraordinary.”
