Karigurashi no Arrietty (借りぐらしのアリエッティ) is a feature-length animated film produced by Studio Ghibli, directed by Yonebayashi Hiromasa from a screenplay planned and co-written by Miyazaki Hayao. The film is based on The Borrowers, the classic novel by Mary Norton.

Broadcast Information

The film will air on Nippon TV as part of the Friday Road SHOW! programming block on 7 August 2026, from 9:00 p.m. to 10:59 p.m. JST.

Story

In an old house on the outskirts of Tokyo, a gentle elderly woman named Sadako (voiced by Takeshita Keiko) lives with her live-in housekeeper Haru (voiced by Kiki Kirin). Beneath the floorboards of the house, however, a secret world exists. There, a family of tiny people has quietly made their home for years: Arrietty (voiced by Shida Mirai), a curious 14-year-old girl; her strict father Pod (voiced by Miura Tomokazu); and her anxious mother Homily (voiced by Otake Shinobu).

The family’s most important rule is simple: never be seen by a human. They survive by “borrowing” small necessities from Sadako’s household, living in careful secrecy.

One summer, Sho (voiced by Kamiki Ryunosuke), a frail 12-year-old boy with a heart condition, arrives at the house to recuperate while his diplomat mother is away. On the very night Arrietty ventures out on her first borrowing trip with her father, she is accidentally spotted by Sho — setting in motion a story neither of them could have anticipated.
