Story Synopsis

In an eastern empire ruled by an emperor, the rear palace — known as the hougong — houses his consorts and serving women. Maomao, a plain girl raised by her apothecary father, never expected to find herself there, until she was kidnapped and sold into service. Though she appears unremarkable, Maomao possesses sharp wit and deep knowledge of medicine — a secret uncovered by the perceptive head eunuch Jinshi, who promptly assigns her as a lady-in-waiting to the Emperor’s favorite consort, tasked with tasting her food for poison.

Franchise Overview

Season 1 debuted in October 2023 with three episodes and ran for two cours, while Season 2 launched in January 2025 on Nippon TV’s FRIDAY ANIME NIGHT block and also ran for two consecutive cours. Both seasons are available on Crunchyroll with English dubs.

The franchise also has an upcoming theatrical film, Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Bōhi no Hihō (The Apothecary Diaries: The Deceased Empress’ Treasure), opening in cinemas on December 11 with a brand-new story penned by original author Hyuganatsu. Additionally, a live-action series adaptation is in the works and will debut on Amazon Prime Video worldwide in 2028.

Hyuganatsu originally began serializing the story on the “Shōsetsuka ni Narō” website in October 2011. Shufunotomo started publishing the print novel volumes with Shino’s illustrations in August 2014. Nekokurage’s manga adaptation has run in Square Enix’s Monthly Big Gangan since May 2017; Square Enix Manga & Books releases both the manga and novels in English. Viz Media publishes Minoji Kurata’s separate manga adaptation, The Apothecary Diaries: Maomao’s Notes on the Inner Palace, in print.
