The French animated film Azur et Asmar (Azur and Asmar), featuring a Japanese dub supervised by the legendary director Isao Takahata — who oversaw the voice direction, adaptation, and co-production — will receive a special screening for just one day on June 20 at UDX Theater in Akihabara, Tokyo. The screening will be presented in high-definition Blu-ray format.

About the Film

Azur et Asmar is a work by French director Michel Ocelot, who grew up in Africa. The film tells an adventurous fantasy story that takes the theme of “cultural difference” as its central thread, exploring both the clashes and the harmony between people of different cultures. It was first released in 2006.

Isao Takahata had a long-standing relationship with Michel Ocelot. He had previously translated and directed the Japanese dub of Ocelot’s earlier film Kirikou et la Sorcière (Kirikou and the Sorceress). That collaboration forged a close bond between the two, leading them to work together again on Azur et Asmar.

Post-Screening Talk Show

After the screening, there will be a special talk show featuring voice actress Yoko Honmei (本名陽子), who voiced the fairy princess in Azur et Asmar and has previously voiced young Taeko Okajima in Only Yesterday (おもひでぽろぽろ) and Shizuku Tsukishima in Whisper of the Heart (耳をすませば).

The event will be moderated by Seiji Kano, an anime film researcher, who will guide attendees through a deeper look at Isao Takahata’s directorial style and the behind-the-scenes story of the dubbing process.

Ticket Sales

Tickets will go on sale through the official Dreampass website on May 20 at 19:00 (Japan time).
