Story
Set in the late 1980s, the story follows Aoko Aozaki, one of two sister heirs to a long line of modern mages. Despite her indifference toward magic, she is abruptly named the successor to her family’s arcane arts and reluctantly begins training under Alice Kuonji, a young witch who lives in a secluded manor atop a hill. Aoko juggles her magical apprenticeship with her role as student council president at school.
Along the way, she befriends Sōjūrō Shizuki, a transfer student who seems out of step with the modern world, while also contending with the schemes of her older sister Tōko Aozaki, who believes her birthright as family heir was unjustly taken from her.
Origins and the Nasuverse
Mahōtsukai no Yoru originated as one of the earliest collaborations between writer Kinoko Nasu and artist Takashi Takeuchi in the mid-1990s, predating the founding of Type-Moon. What began as a novel circulated only among friends was eventually developed into a full visual novel with graphics by Hirokazu Koyama, releasing in April 2012.
The title holds a notable place in the loosely connected Nasuverse — the fan term for the shared universe spanning Type-Moon works such as Tsukihime, Fate/stay night, and The Garden of Sinners. An older Aoko Aozaki serves as an early mentor to Tsukihime protagonist Shiki Tohno, while an older Tōko Aozaki employs Garden of Sinners protagonist Shiki Ryōgi.
